PART 20: “The Index”
Detective Brooks laid the notebook in the center of the conference table.
Unlike the other documents, this one wasn’t filled with long explanations.
Each page contained a numbered list.
A document number.
A storage location.
A brief description.
And a single sentence explaining why it had been preserved.
“It really is an index,” Melissa whispered.
Brooks nodded.
“Your father wanted investigators to understand the purpose of every record.”
He turned to the first page.
“Item 1: Family calendars. Preserved to establish dates.”
The next entry read:
“Item 2: Financial records. Preserved to verify transactions independently.”
Another page.
“Item 3: Medical correspondence. Preserved because facts should never depend on memory alone.”
Dr. Harper looked up.
“That reflects good investigative practice.”
Brooks continued turning pages.
The entries became more detailed.
Some referred to photographs.
Others referred to letters.
Several pointed investigators toward records that had already been collected from the bank, the attorney, and the storage unit.
Melissa smiled sadly.
“My father spent years making sure nothing would be taken out of context.”
“He wanted the evidence to speak for itself.”
Brooks nodded.
“And that’s exactly what it’s doing.”
He reached the final section of the notebook.
Unlike the earlier pages, these entries were marked with stars.
“There are only four.”
He read the first.
“Verify every witness independently.”
The second.
“Compare every statement against official records.”
The third.
“Never assume missing information means missing truth.”
He paused before reading the final entry.
“Open the final envelope only after the timeline is complete.”
Everyone looked toward the evidence shelf.
The envelope marked Open This Last remained sealed inside its protective bag.
Brooks folded the notebook closed.
“We’re getting close.”
“But we’re not there yet.”
A young investigator entered carrying a laptop.
“We’ve finished organizing the timeline.”
Brooks motioned for him to connect it to the conference room screen.
A digital timeline appeared.
Every document had been matched to a date.
Every witness interview had been placed in order.
Medical records.
School records.
Financial records.
Letters.
Photographs.
Journal entries.
The once-empty gaps had almost disappeared.
“There,” Brooks said quietly.
“For the first time, we can see the complete sequence.”
I stared at the screen.
For years, my life had felt like scattered memories.
Now it had become an organized history.
Not because someone rewrote it.
Because people had carefully gathered the facts.
Emily looked at the screen with innocent curiosity.
“That’s a lot of pages.”
Karen smiled.
“It tells the story of how people worked together to find the truth.”
Emily nodded thoughtfully.
“I like stories with good endings.”
“So do I,” I said.
The room fell quiet.
Detective Brooks studied the completed timeline one final time.
“I think we’ve reached the point your father intended.”
Melissa looked toward the evidence shelf.
“You mean…”
Brooks nodded.
“Yes.”
He carefully removed the sealed envelope labeled Open This Last.
He held it for a moment before placing it gently on the table.
“No more missing chapters.”
“No more unanswered dates.”
He looked around the room.
“I believe it’s finally time to read the last message your father left behind.”
