Part Four: What the Folders Contained

Franklin asked everyone to take a seat, if the room’s limited seating allowed it, and explained, calmly and clearly, that he was present at Otis Callan’s specific written instruction, to ensure the contents of that safe were reviewed properly, with full documentation, in front of the family Otis had wanted informed.

I finally opened the handwritten note.

Renata, if you’re reading this in front of the family the way we discussed, then everything went according to plan, and I’m sorry I couldn’t be there to watch your brother’s face when he finally understands what’s actually inside that safe.

I found out, about a year before writing this, that Bryson had been taking money from our joint account for a long while — small amounts individually, but enough, added together, to represent a serious betrayal of the trust I’d extended him years earlier during a difficult period in his own life.

I want you to know I considered confronting him directly, more than once. I decided against it, in the end, because I understood your brother well enough to know that a direct confrontation, this late in my life, would only produce excuses, tears, and promises he likely couldn’t keep, without ever actually resolving the underlying pattern.

So I did something else instead. I worked with Franklin to document everything fully — every transaction, every discrepancy, everything the forensic review uncovered. I let Bryson continue believing, right up until the end, that a substantial inheritance awaited him, because I understood that grief has a particular way of making people careless, and that if Bryson believed he was owed something enormous, he would eventually reveal, in front of witnesses, exactly the character he’s spent years trying to keep hidden from the rest of the family.

I’m sorry to put you in the position of holding this until the right moment, Renata. I trusted you with it because you’re the one person in this family who’s never once needed a dramatic gesture to prove your loyalty. You simply showed up, every single time, and did what needed doing.

The folders contain everything Franklin’s team documented. The flash drive holds copies of the original bank records. What happens next is between Bryson and the appropriate authorities — I’ve left that decision, ultimately, in your hands and Franklin’s, rather than dictating it myself from beyond the grave.

I love you both, even now, even knowing what I know about the choices one of you made. That doesn’t stop being true simply because trust, once broken this specifically, is difficult to fully repair.

Dad

The room stayed completely silent once I finished reading it aloud.
