Part Six: What Happened Next

Bryson didn’t choose to discuss anything further in front of the assembled family. He left the house within the hour, Marielle following close behind him, neither of them saying another word to me or to any other relative before they went.

What followed, over the subsequent months, was considerably less dramatic than that funeral confrontation, though no less significant. The bank’s own investigation confirmed Franklin’s forensic findings. Given the documented pattern and the specific legal boundaries of the original joint account authorization, the bank pursued its own recovery process, while I, as executor, worked with Franklin to formally address the misappropriated funds as part of settling Dad’s estate.

Bryson ultimately agreed to a repayment arrangement rather than face the more serious legal consequences a formal criminal complaint might have produced — a decision I supported, honestly, more out of respect for what I believed Dad would have genuinely wanted than out of any particular mercy I felt toward my brother in that specific moment.

I don’t know that Bryson and I will ever fully repair our relationship. We’ve spoken exactly twice since that afternoon in Dad’s study, both conversations brief, careful, and considerably more formal than anything resembling actual reconciliation.

I’ve made a kind of peace with that. I think, in the end, Dad understood something about patience that I’m still learning to fully practice myself — that some truths need time and the right witnesses before they can actually land the way they need to, and that revealing them too early, out of anger or impatience, often accomplishes considerably less than simply waiting for the person in question to reveal themselves, in their own words, in front of everyone who needed to finally see it clearly.

I still keep that brass key on the same chain beneath my collar, though the safe it once opened sits empty now, its actual purpose long since fulfilled.

THE END.
