PART 21: “The Final Letter”
Detective Brooks examined the seal one last time before opening the envelope.
A forensic photographer documented every step.
Only after the photographs were complete did Brooks carefully slide the letter onto the table.
The paper had yellowed with age.
The handwriting matched every verified sample they had collected from Thomas Collins.
Brooks began reading aloud.
“If this letter has been opened, then the people reading it have done exactly what I hoped they would do. They gathered facts before forming opinions.”
The room remained silent.
“No single document tells the whole story. That is why I separated everything. Truth is strongest when every piece supports the next.”
Melissa quietly wiped away a tear.
“That sounds exactly like Dad.”
Brooks continued.
“If you have reached this page, then you already know where every important record was stored. I ask only one more thing. Protect the children from carrying the weight of decisions they never made.”
Emily looked up.
“Is he talking about us?”
I gently squeezed her hand.
“Yes, sweetheart.”
Brooks read on.
“Adults must answer for their own choices. Children deserve the chance to grow without fear, blame, or secrets.”
Dr. Harper slowly nodded.
“That’s a remarkable message.”
Brooks turned to the final page.
Attached to it with a paper clip was a folded sheet titled Inventory Summary.
It listed every location investigators had already visited.
The bank.
The attorney’s office.
The storage unit.
Family records.
Medical documents.
Witness lists.
Every location had a check mark beside it.
At the bottom appeared one final handwritten note.
“When every item on this list has been verified, my work is finished. From this point forward, let the evidence speak.”
Brooks lowered the letter.
“I believe we’ve now recovered everything Thomas Collins intended investigators to find.”
Melissa looked at the pages spread across the table.
“He spent years preparing for a day he hoped would never come.”
Brooks nodded.
“And because he preserved these records carefully, we were able to verify them independently.”
Ms. Alvarez smiled gently.
“Now the focus can shift.”
“To what?” I asked.
“To helping you and your daughters build a future instead of revisiting the past.”
Emily reached over and hugged me.
“Can we really do that?”
I smiled through tears.
“Yes.”
“For the first time in a long time…I believe we can.”
Just then, Brooks’ phone vibrated.
He answered, listened quietly, and thanked the caller.
“What is it?” Melissa asked.
He slipped the phone back into his pocket.
“The district attorney’s office has completed its review of the investigative file.”
Everyone waited.
Brooks smiled for the first time since I had met him.
“They’ve made their decision.”
