PART 4 AND 5 – I Came Home Early and Found My Wife Bleeding—Then I Discovered What My Son Had Done

PART 4

I stood beneath the attic opening, staring into the darkness.

The ladder creaked softly above me.

Someone had been there.

I knew it before I even climbed the first step.

I reached for the light switch.

Nothing happened.

The bulb had been removed.

“Michael?” I called.

Silence.

I climbed carefully, using my phone flashlight to illuminate the narrow attic.

Boxes surrounded me.

Christmas decorations.

Old photographs.

My father’s fishing equipment.

Sarah’s mother’s sewing machine.

And then I saw the blue folder.

It was on the floor.

Open.

Empty.

My stomach dropped.

Someone had found it.

I crouched down and looked around.

A small piece of paper lay beneath one of the boxes.

I picked it up.

It was torn from the blue folder.

There were three words written across it in Sarah’s handwriting:

ASK THE NOTARY.

I froze.

The notary.

The person who had supposedly witnessed Sarah’s signature.

I pulled out my phone.

Then I heard something downstairs.

A door closing.

I immediately turned off my flashlight.

Someone was in the house.

I stayed completely still.

Footsteps moved through the hallway.

Slow.

Careful.

Then I heard a familiar voice.

“Dad?”

Michael.

I didn’t answer.

He called again.

“Dad, I know you’re here.”

I remained silent.

He walked toward the staircase.

“Please.”

His voice sounded different.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Afraid.

I slowly descended.

Michael stood at the bottom.

His face was pale.

“You shouldn’t have come here alone,” he said.

I stared at him.

“You shouldn’t have come here at all.”

He looked toward the attic.

“You found it?”

“No.”

He closed his eyes.

“Dad…”

“Where is the folder?”

“I don’t have it.”

“Then who does?”

He didn’t answer.

I walked toward him.

“You have until I reach the front door to tell me the truth.”

He looked at me.

“David took it.”

I stopped.

“Why?”

“Because I found out what he was doing.”

I stared at my son.

“What did you find out?”

Michael swallowed.

“Dad, this wasn’t supposed to happen.”

“What wasn’t?”

“Mom getting hurt.”

I felt my hands tighten into fists.

“You knew they were going to pressure her.”

“Yes.”

“You knew they were bringing documents.”

“Yes.”

“You knew she didn’t want to sign.”

“Yes.”

“And you still let it happen.”

Michael looked down.

“I thought she would eventually agree.”

I shook my head.

“Why?”

“Because David told me the restaurant could be saved.”

“And you believed him?”

“I wanted to.”

That answer broke something in me.

Not because it was complicated.

Because it was simple.

My son had wanted money badly enough to believe anyone who promised him some.

“Where’s the folder?”

Michael looked toward the window.

“David has it.”

“Where?”

“He took it to the office.”

“What office?”

“Waverly.”

I stared at him.

“You’re going to take me there.”

Michael shook his head.

“No.”

“Then I’ll go alone.”

“He’ll know.”

“I don’t care.”

Michael grabbed my arm.

“Dad, listen to me.”

I pulled away.

“You’ve done enough.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I’m trying to fix it.”

“You should have tried before your mother bled on the floor.”

He flinched.

“I know.”

“No. You don’t.”

I pointed toward the living room.

“That woman gave you everything.”

Michael began crying.

“I know.”

“She defended you.”

“I know.”

“She lied for you.”

“I know.”

“She still believes you’re worth saving.”

He covered his face.

“I know.”

I lowered my voice.

“And that’s the only reason I’m standing here talking to you instead of letting the police handle everything.”

Michael looked at me.

“What do you want me to do?”

I stared at him.

“Tell the truth.”

He nodded.

Then he reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small flash drive.

“This is a copy.”

I took it.

“Copy of what?”

“The recording.”

I looked at him.

“You have it?”

“I copied it before David took the folder.”

“Why?”

“Because I finally realized what they were doing.”

I inserted the drive into my laptop.

The recording began.

David’s voice filled the room.

“…once the deed is transferred, the property becomes leverage.”

Then Olivia’s voice.

“What if Sarah refuses?”

David laughed.

“Then we make her believe Michael will lose everything.”

Michael’s recorded voice followed.

“She won’t sign if Dad finds out.”

David answered calmly.

“Then make sure your father doesn’t find out until it’s done.”

I stared at the screen.

The recording continued.

David explained that the restaurant was not the real objective.

The restaurant was already effectively dead.

The real goal was our land.

The rezoning had turned our property into one of the most valuable undeveloped parcels in the area.

A development company wanted it.

David had connections with the company.

He planned to use Michael as the family connection.

And once the property was transferred, they would sell it for millions.

Michael had never been the mastermind.

But he had been the doorway.

Then came the part that made my blood run cold.

David said:

“If Sarah gets injured, we call it an accident. If she refuses, we make Daniel look unstable. Either way, they eventually surrender.”

I stopped the recording.

Michael was crying.

I looked at him.

“You heard this?”

“Yes.”

“And you still stayed silent?”

“I was scared.”

I nodded.

“That doesn’t excuse you.”

“I know.”

I picked up my phone.

“Now we go to the police.”

Michael nodded.

“I’ll tell them everything.”

Part 5 — The Notary

By 1:15 a.m., we were sitting in a police station.

Michael gave a full statement.

He told them everything.

The documents.

The pressure.

The restaurant.

The land.

David.

Olivia.

The recording.

The police took the flash drive.

Then one detective looked at me.

“There’s something you need to know.”

“What?”

“The deed document you found may already have been filed.”

My heart dropped.

“What?”

“We’re checking the county records.”

I waited.

Minutes later, the detective returned.

“The transfer was submitted electronically yesterday.”

I felt my stomach turn.

“But Sarah never signed it.”

“That may be why the notary matters.”

I remembered the note.

ASK THE NOTARY.

The detective searched the document.

“There is a notary stamp.”

“Who?”

He gave me the name.

Evelyn Harper.

I recognized it.

She was an elderly notary who had worked in town for decades.

The detective called her.

She answered at 1:42 a.m.

When the detective mentioned Sarah’s name, the woman immediately said:

“I knew this would happen.”

My heart stopped.

The detective put her on speaker.

“What do you mean?”

“I never notarized Sarah’s signature.”

Silence.

“Then why is your stamp on the document?”

“Because someone stole my stamp.”

I looked at Michael.

He stared at the floor.

Evelyn continued.

“I reported it missing two weeks ago.”

The detective looked at me.

Two weeks.

That meant the fraud had been planned before my trip.

Before the assault.

Before tonight.

Everything had been deliberate.

Part 6 — The Trap

By morning, the police had enough evidence to move.

But we still needed one thing.

The original documents.

David had them.

So we set a trap.

Michael called Olivia.

He told her he had found the blue folder and was willing to cooperate.

She believed him.

She told him to meet them at the restaurant office.

The police listened to the entire conversation.

At 10:15 a.m., Michael walked into the office wearing a hidden recording device.

I stayed nearby with the detective.

Inside, David was waiting.

Olivia stood beside him.

Jessica was there too.

David smiled when Michael entered.

“You finally understand.”

Michael nodded.

“I want my share.”

David smiled wider.

“Good.”

Michael sat down.

“Where are the documents?”

David opened a drawer.

He pulled out the blue folder.

My heart nearly stopped.

There it was.

Everything Sarah had collected.

Evidence.

Records.

The original documents.

And then David said something that sealed his fate.

“Once your parents sign, they’ll never know how much we made.”

Michael looked at him.

“And if they don’t sign?”

David shrugged.

“Then we make sure they can’t stop us.”

Michael stared at him.

“You hurt Mom.”

David’s expression barely changed.

“She shouldn’t have resisted.”

That was enough.

The police entered.

“David Carter, you’re under arrest.”

Chaos erupted.

Olivia screamed.

Jessica started crying.

David tried to run.

He didn’t get far.

The officers arrested all three.

Michael stayed seated.

He looked completely broken.

When I entered the room, he stood.

“I told them everything.”

“I know.”

“Dad…”

I waited.

“Can you ever forgive me?”

I looked at my son for a long time.

“I don’t know.”

His face fell.

“But,” I continued, “forgiveness isn’t something you demand.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“You earn it.”

He wiped his eyes.

“I’ll try.”

“Then start by accepting the consequences.”

He nodded.

“I will.”
