Part 7 — Sarah
Sarah spent two nights in the hospital.
On the third morning, she was discharged.
When we returned home, she stood in the living room for a long time.
Her eyes moved toward the rug.
The stain had been professionally cleaned.
But she still remembered.
I put my arm around her.
“You don’t have to stay here if you don’t want to.”
She looked at me.
“This is my home.”
I smiled.
“Yes.”
She looked toward the kitchen.
“Where’s Michael?”
I didn’t answer immediately.
“He’s staying with a friend.”
She nodded.
“Is he okay?”
“He will be.”
She sighed.
“He’s still my son.”
“I know.”
She looked at me.
“But I don’t want to protect him from consequences anymore.”
I smiled.
“That is the strongest thing you’ve said all week.”
She leaned against me.
“I thought I was protecting him.”
“You were.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
She looked toward the window.
“I was protecting the little boy I remembered.”
I squeezed her hand.
“Sometimes we have to let our children become adults.”
She smiled sadly.
“Even when they become people we don’t recognize.”
Part 8 — Six Months Later
The case lasted months.
David was charged with fraud, conspiracy, document forgery, and financial crimes.
Olivia accepted a plea agreement after cooperating with investigators.
Jessica admitted she had known more than she originally claimed.
Michael testified against David.
He also repaid every dollar he could.
He sold his car.
Closed his accounts.
Gave up his apartment.
And most importantly, he stopped asking his parents to rescue him.
He started working again.
Not in finance.
Not in restaurants.
He took a regular job and slowly rebuilt his life.
Six months after the night Sarah was injured, Michael came to our house.
He stood on the porch.
He didn’t knock immediately.
I opened the door.
He looked nervous.
“Can I come in?”
I stepped aside.
Sarah was sitting in the living room.
When she saw him, her eyes filled with tears.
Michael stopped several feet away.
“Mom.”
She stood.
For a moment, neither moved.
Then Sarah walked toward him.
She hugged him.
Michael broke down.
He cried against her shoulder like the little boy she had remembered.
But when he finally pulled away, Sarah said something I knew he would never forget.
“I love you.”
Michael nodded through tears.
“But love doesn’t mean I’ll let you hurt me again.”
He whispered:
“I understand.”
And for the first time, he truly did.
