PART 6: “The Messages He Never Thought Anyone Would Read”
Detective Brooks lowered his phone and looked around the room.
“The digital forensics team completed a preliminary review of Richard’s phone.”
No one spoke.
“They recovered messages that had been deleted.”
A quiet tension settled over the room.
Brooks continued.
“Deleting a message doesn’t always remove it permanently. In many cases, investigators can recover portions of the data.”
Ms. Alvarez folded her hands.
“What did they find?”
Brooks opened a folder.
“Several conversations appear to show Richard trying to control how others viewed your injuries.”
I felt my chest tighten.
“He told people I was clumsy.”
Brooks nodded.
“That explanation appears repeatedly.”
He slid a printed page onto the table.
“We’re verifying every message before drawing conclusions, but they may become important evidence.”
Dr. Harper reviewed the document without commenting.
Brooks continued.
“We’re also comparing those messages with medical records, witness statements, and the timeline we’ve been building.”
For the first time since arriving at the hospital, I realized this case no longer depended only on my memory.
It was being built piece by piece.
Emily quietly climbed onto the chair beside my bed.
“Mom?”
I looked at her.
“Are we safe now?”
I squeezed her hand.
“We’re with people who are helping us.”
Dr. Harper smiled gently.
“And no one will ask you to go anywhere until we know you have a safe place to stay.”
A few minutes later, another detective entered carrying a large envelope.
“I have the certified copies.”
Brooks accepted the envelope.
“What are those?”
“The emergency room records from the last several years.”
He opened the file.
“There were more visits than we expected.”
Each page listed a different date.
A different injury.
A different explanation.
One visit mentioned a bruised shoulder.
Another recorded fractured ribs.
Another described a wrist injury.
Each record contained a different account of how it supposedly happened.
Brooks placed the pages in chronological order.
“When these records are viewed individually, they don’t necessarily tell the whole story.”
He tapped the stack lightly.
“But together, they help establish a pattern that investigators need to examine carefully.”
I stared at the growing file.
For years, every incident had felt isolated.
Now they formed a timeline.
Not of accidents.
But of a life I had survived.
A soft knock interrupted the silence.
A family court advocate stepped into the room.
She introduced herself and explained that her role was to help families understand the legal process and available resources.
“You don’t have to make every decision today,” she said.
“We’ll take this one step at a time.”
Her words lifted a weight I hadn’t realized I was carrying.
One step.
For years, I had believed there was no path forward.
Now, for the first time, someone was showing me one.
As the advocate gathered her papers, Detective Brooks’ phone rang again.
He listened quietly before thanking the caller.
When he ended the call, he looked directly at me.
“We’ve located another witness.”
I held my breath.
“Who?”
Brooks closed the folder.
“Someone who worked with Richard for several years.”
He paused.
“And according to the caller, they’ve been waiting a long time for the chance to tell the truth.”…..
