PART 7: “I’ve Been Waiting Years to Tell the Truth”

PART 7: “I’ve Been Waiting Years to Tell the Truth”

The next afternoon, Detective Brooks returned with a man I had never seen before.
He appeared to be in his early fifties.
His posture was stiff.
His expression was uneasy.
He stopped just inside the doorway.
“My name is Thomas Reynolds,” he said quietly.
“I worked with Richard for almost seven years.”
Detective Brooks closed the door behind them.
“Mr. Reynolds asked to speak with you personally.”
Thomas looked at me with genuine regret.
“I should have come forward a long time ago.”
I searched his face.
“Do I know you?”
He shook his head.
“No.”
“But I know more about your husband than I ever wanted to.”
The room became silent.
Thomas slowly sat down.
“Richard talked about his home life almost every day.”
I frowned.
“He… talked about us?”
Thomas nodded.
“He wanted people to believe he was the victim.”
“He complained that you embarrassed him because you hadn’t given him a son.”
My stomach tightened.
“He said that?”
“Many times.”
Thomas looked down at his hands.
“At first, most of us thought he was just blowing off steam.”
He sighed heavily.
“Then his stories became darker.”
Detective Brooks opened his notebook.
“Can you explain?”
Thomas nodded.
“There were mornings when Richard came to work bragging that he had ‘taught his wife another lesson.’”
Emily looked at me.
She didn’t fully understand the conversation, but she knew enough to move closer and hold my hand.
Thomas continued.
“Most people laughed nervously because they thought he was joking.”
“I wasn’t so sure.”
He reached into a folder he had brought with him.
“I kept copies of several emails Richard sent me over the years.”
Detective Brooks carefully accepted them.
“Why did you save these?”
Thomas answered honestly.
“Because something about them never felt right.”
Brooks skimmed the pages….

Several messages discussed missing work after arguments at home.
Others contained angry complaints about family pressure and his obsession with having a son.
One message ended with a sentence that made the detective pause.
He read it silently before placing the paper back into the folder.
Thomas noticed.
“That’s the one that always bothered me.”
Brooks looked up.
“Why?”
“Because it wasn’t written like someone who had lost his temper.”
Thomas spoke slowly.
“It sounded like someone who believed he would never face consequences.”
The detective carefully organized the documents.
“These will be reviewed along with the other evidence.”
Thomas nodded.
“I’ll cooperate however I can.”
Before leaving, he turned back toward me.
“I can’t change the past.”
“But I can tell the truth now.”
After he walked out, the room remained quiet.
Dr. Harper finally spoke.
“Every truthful statement helps investigators understand the full picture.”
I looked at my daughters.
For the first time in years, I realized we weren’t carrying the truth alone anymore.
Just then, Detective Brooks received another message.
He read it once.
Then again.
Dr. Harper noticed the change in his expression.
“What happened?”
Brooks slipped the phone into his pocket.
“The forensic accountants finished reviewing the family’s financial records.”
He looked directly at me.
“It appears Richard was hiding something much bigger than anyone suspected.”
