PART 8: “The Money Trail”
Detective Brooks remained standing for several seconds, his hand resting on the folder.
“The financial review is still preliminary,” he said, “but we’ve identified several transactions that investigators need to examine more closely.”
I looked at him in confusion.
“I never handled our finances.”
“I know.”
Richard had insisted on controlling every bank account.
Every paycheck.
Every bill.
He always told me the same thing.
“You don’t need to worry about money. I’ll take care of everything.”
Now those words sounded less like reassurance and more like another way to keep me dependent.
Brooks opened the folder.
“Over the past five years, your salary was regularly deposited into a joint account.”
I nodded.
“I never even had a debit card.”
Ms. Alvarez looked surprised.
“You didn’t?”
Richard always said it was easier if he managed everything.
If I needed groceries, he gave me cash.
If I needed clothes for the girls, I had to ask.
Sometimes he said yes.
Sometimes he didn’t.
Detective Brooks slid several bank statements across the table.
“Large amounts of money were transferred from that account into another account that appears to have been controlled solely by Richard.”
I stared at the pages.
“I’ve never seen these before.”
“That’s understandable,” Brooks replied. “We’re requesting additional records to determine exactly where the money went.”
Dr. Harper quietly closed the file.
“Financial control is something we often see alongside other forms of abuse.”
His words hit me harder than I expected.
I had spent years believing I simply wasn’t good with money.
Now I wondered if I had ever been given the chance.
Emily looked up from the coloring book a volunteer had brought her.
“Mom?”
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“When we get our new home…”
She hesitated.
“Can we have pancakes for dinner?”
A laugh escaped before I could stop it.
It was the first genuine laugh I had made in years.
“We absolutely can.”
Lily smiled.
“And can we paint my room yellow?”
I brushed a strand of hair from her face.
“If you want a yellow room, we’ll find one.”
The girls smiled at each other.
For the first time, they were talking about the future instead of fearing tomorrow.
A soft knock interrupted the moment.
Karen Douglas, the school counselor, stepped inside carrying two backpacks.
“I stopped by the school this morning.”
Emily’s face lit up.
“My backpack!”
Karen nodded.
“The principal wanted the girls to have their favorite books and a few personal things.”
Emily hugged the backpack tightly.
Lily immediately searched hers and pulled out a worn stuffed rabbit.
“I thought I lost him.”
Karen smiled warmly.
“No.”
“He was waiting for you.”
As the girls settled onto the couch with their belongings, Detective Brooks received another call.
He listened without interrupting.
His expression gradually changed.
When the call ended, he looked directly at me.
“The search warrant for your home has been completed.”
I swallowed.
“Did they find anything?”
Brooks nodded slowly.
“They found a locked metal box hidden in Richard’s home office.”
“Inside were documents, photographs, and handwritten notes.”
He paused.
“We’re still reviewing everything.”
I searched his face.
“Is it important?”
The detective met my eyes.
“I believe that box may explain why Richard worked so hard to control every part of your life.”
The room fell silent once again.
Somewhere inside that locked box…
The investigators believed the answers had been waiting all along.
