PART 5
The lawsuit changed within forty-eight hours.
My parents’ attorney withdrew.
Then another attorney withdrew.
Then the court issued an order preventing anyone from selling, transferring, or altering Grandma’s remaining property until the financial investigation was complete.
Dad called me that night.
I almost didn’t answer.
“Brianna.”
His voice sounded different.
Not angry.
Afraid.
“What do you want?”
“We need to talk.”
“We’ve been talking for months.”
“No. You don’t understand.”
“I understand more than I did yesterday.”
Silence.
Then Dad whispered,
“Your grandmother hated me.”
“No.”
“She turned you against me.”
“No.”
“She manipulated you.”
I closed my eyes.
“You stole from her.”
He said nothing.
“You forged documents.”
Nothing.
“You took money from her company.”
His voice cracked.
“I was going to pay it back.”
“That’s what you call it?”
“I was struggling.”
“So you stole from your mother?”
“I didn’t steal.”
“You just admitted you took it.”
“I borrowed it!”
“For how many years?”
Silence.
Then Dad said,
“I made mistakes.”
I almost laughed.
“Grandma didn’t call them mistakes.”
He started crying.
My father.
The man who had threatened me in the kitchen.
The man who had told me a judge would take my house.
He was crying.
“Please.”
I didn’t say anything.
“I’ll sign whatever you want.”
“Dad—”
“I’ll drop the lawsuit.”
“You should.”
“I’ll give you the house.”
“What house?”
“Your grandmother’s.”
I froze.
“Why?”
“Because it’s yours.”
“No.”
“What?”
“Grandma gave it to you.”
“She shouldn’t have.”
I understood then.
He wasn’t offering me the house because he had suddenly become generous.
He was afraid of what was inside it.
The evidence.
The records.
The truth.
“Dad,” I said quietly, “I’m not trading the evidence for a house.”
He began sobbing.
“I never meant for it to go this far.”
I looked out my window at the house I had bought.
The house my parents had tried to take.
“No,” I said.
“You didn’t.”
I hung up.
