PART 7
The next morning, I woke up before sunrise.
Not because I was rested.
Because my mind had never stopped working.
For thirty-eight years, I had believed my biggest responsibility was protecting my family from the outside world.
I never imagined I would have to protect my family from someone inside it.
Linda was already awake when I walked into the kitchen.
She was sitting at the table, holding two cups of coffee.
One for her.
One for me.
Just like she had done almost every morning of our marriage.
Some things don’t change, even when everything else falls apart.
“You look tired,” she said.
“I am.”
She nodded.
“So am I.”
I sat across from her.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she reached across the table and touched my hand.
“Tom.”
“Yes?”
“Whatever happens today…”
She took a breath.
“Don’t let anger turn you into someone you’re not.”
I looked at her.
Even after everything Ethan had done, she was still worried about me.
That was Linda.
She had always been the heart of our family.
“I won’t,” I promised.
She squeezed my hand.
“But don’t let him hurt you either.”
I nodded.
“I won’t.”
At exactly nine o’clock, the doorbell rang.
Ethan.
I opened the door.
He was standing there wearing a suit.
Not jeans.
Not casual clothes.
A suit.
The kind someone wears when they want to appear powerful.
Behind him stood Ashley.
And another man I did not recognize.
“Dad,” Ethan said.
“Come in.”
They entered.
The stranger looked around the house.
Not like a guest.
Like someone inspecting a property.
I noticed.
So did Robert, who was sitting in the living room.
Ethan stopped when he saw him.
“What is he doing here?”
I answered calmly.
“He is my attorney.”
Ethan’s face changed.
“Dad, this is a family matter.”
“No.”
I looked directly at him.
“This stopped being only a family matter when you tried to take our home.”
Ashley crossed her arms.
“Tom, nobody is trying to take anything.”
I looked at her.
“Then why did you bring a lawyer?”
She said nothing.
The stranger stepped forward.
“My name is Daniel Cooper. I represent Ethan.”
Robert stood.
“Robert Hayes.”
The two men shook hands.
But there was no warmth.
Only business.
Ethan looked uncomfortable.
“Dad, I came here because I want to fix things.”
I almost smiled.
“Fix things?”
“Yes.”
“Like you fixed the door code?”
His jaw tightened.
“I made a mistake.”
“A mistake?”
“Yes.”
“You locked your mother outside her home.”
He looked away.
“I was frustrated.”
Linda finally spoke.
“Ethan.”
He turned toward her.
She looked at him with tears in her eyes.
“Did you really believe I would just leave?”
His expression softened for a second.
“Mom…”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“Answer me.”
The room became silent.
Ethan looked down.
“I thought you would understand eventually.”
Linda stared at him.
“Understand what?”
“That things have to change.”
“Things?”
She laughed sadly.
“You mean your parents?”
Ethan didn’t answer.
And that silence was his answer.
I stepped forward.
“Why, Ethan?”
He looked at me.
“Why what?”
“Why did you do this?”
For the first time, I saw something different in his face.
Not confidence.
Not anger.
Fear.
“I had problems.”
“What kind?”
He looked at Ashley.
She avoided his eyes.
That told me everything.
“You’re in debt.”
His face changed.
“How did you know?”
“I know more than you think.”
He looked at Robert.
Then at me.
“You investigated me?”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“Someone who cared enough to tell the truth did.”
Ethan became quiet.
Then suddenly he exploded.
“You have no idea what it’s like!”
His voice echoed through the house.
“You have this perfect life! This perfect house! This retirement! Everything!”
I stared at him.
“Everything?”
“Yes!”
He pointed around.
“You built this life and then expected me to just wait until you died to have anything!”
Linda gasped.
I felt something break inside me.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Disappointment.
“Ethan…”
“No, Dad! I’m tired of waiting!”
The words came out faster now.
“I have bills. I have debt. Ashley and I lost money. We made mistakes.”
