PART 4: “You’re Under Arrest”

PART 4: “You’re Under Arrest”

The hallway fell silent.

No one inside the room could see what had happened, but everyone heard the unmistakable click of handcuffs.

Emily tightened her grip on my hand.

“Mom…?”

I forced a small smile.

“It’s okay, sweetheart.”

Officer Daniel Brooks stepped back into the room a few moments later. He closed the door quietly behind him before speaking.

“Mrs. Collins, your husband has been detained while we continue our investigation.”

I stared at him.

“Detained?”

He nodded.

“He became aggressive toward hospital staff and repeatedly ignored lawful instructions. Given the medical findings and the statements we’ve received today, we need to investigate this as a possible domestic violence case.”

For several seconds, I couldn’t process his words.

Richard wasn’t giving orders.

He wasn’t shouting.

He wasn’t deciding what happened next.

Someone else was.

Dr. Harper gently placed a folder on the bedside table.

“These are copies of your imaging reports. Every injury has been carefully documented.”

Officer Brooks added another envelope beside it.

“And we’ll be requesting your complete medical history.”

I looked at him in confusion.

“My medical history?”

“We want to determine whether you’ve received treatment for injuries in the past that may be connected.”

Images flashed through my mind.

The urgent care visit when Richard claimed I had slipped on wet tile.

The emergency clinic where he insisted I had walked into a cabinet.

The fractured wrist that was never properly treated because he refused to let me return to the hospital.

Each visit had been another lie.

Officer Brooks seemed to read the expression on my face.

“If you’re ready, we’ll go through each incident together. You don’t have to remember everything today.”

Ms. Alvarez pulled her chair closer.

“You’ll have time. Right now, your only job is to rest.”

Emily looked up at me.

“Are we going home tonight?”

The room became quiet again.

I looked at both of my daughters.

For years, “home” had been the place they feared the most.

I reached out and held both of their hands.

“No.”

My voice was weak but steady.

“We’re going somewhere safe.”

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Can Daddy come there?”

Before I could answer, Officer Brooks spoke gently.

“No, sweetheart.”

“He won’t know where you’re staying.”

For the first time since anyone had entered the room, Emily smiled.

It was small.

Fragile.

But it was real.

A knock came at the door.

Another officer stepped inside carrying a sealed evidence bag.

“Detective Brooks,” she said quietly, “crime scene technicians have finished their initial search.”

Brooks looked up.

“Did they find anything?”

She handed him several photographs.

“They found bloodstains in the backyard that appear to be older than today’s incident.”

She paused before adding one more sentence.

“And one of the neighbors has agreed to give a formal statement.”

Brooks slowly looked toward me.

“It appears,” he said, “that someone finally decided to tell the truth.”
