PART 16: “The Attorney’s Secret File”
The meeting with Margaret Ellis was scheduled for the very next morning.
Detective Brooks insisted it take place at the district attorney’s office.
“If she possesses legal documents,” he explained, “we need to preserve the chain of custody.”
At precisely nine o’clock, the conference room door opened.
A woman in her early seventies walked in carrying a weathered leather briefcase.
She moved slowly but confidently.
“My name is Margaret Ellis.”
She shook Detective Brooks’ hand before looking toward Melissa.
“I’m sorry we’re meeting under these circumstances.”
Melissa nodded sadly.
“So am I.”
Margaret placed the briefcase on the table.
“I received your father’s note many years ago.”
She looked toward Melissa.
“He told me one day someone would come asking questions.”
Detective Brooks leaned forward.
“Did he explain why?”
“Not completely.”
“He simply said he feared the truth would disappear if it wasn’t carefully preserved.”
Margaret unlocked the briefcase.
Inside was a neatly organized expanding file.
Each section carried a handwritten label.
Family.
Property.
Financial Records.
Correspondence.
Personal Notes.
Brooks carefully examined the folders.
“You’ve kept all of this?”
“For more than ten years.”
“Untouched.”…
Margaret removed one sealed envelope.
“This was never meant for me to open.”
“It was only meant for safekeeping.”
Across the front, in faded blue ink, were the words:
To Be Released Only If An Official Investigation Begins.
Brooks photographed the envelope before carefully breaking the seal.
Inside was a handwritten statement.
He read silently for several moments.
No one interrupted.
Finally, Dr. Harper asked,
“What does it say?”
Brooks looked around the room.
“It isn’t an accusation.”
“It’s a request.”
Melissa frowned.
“A request?”
Brooks nodded.
“Richard’s father wrote that if an investigation ever occurred, he wanted investigators to rely on evidence—not assumptions.”
Margaret smiled faintly.
“That sounds exactly like him.”
Brooks continued reading.
“He listed every place where supporting records could be found.”
“The bank.”
“My office.”
“Medical records.”
“Family journals.”
“Witnesses he believed would tell the truth if asked.”
He lowered the letter.
“He wanted every claim independently verified.”
Margaret reached into another folder.
“I believe this belongs with the investigation as well.”
She handed Brooks a certified copy of a legal document.
“What is it?” Ms. Alvarez asked.
“A notarized statement prepared years ago.”
“It wasn’t filed with any court.”
“Why not?”
“Because Richard’s father believed it wasn’t yet necessary.”
Brooks carefully reviewed the certification.
“The notarization appears valid.”
Margaret nodded.
“It remained sealed in accordance with his written instructions.”
Emily, who had been quietly reading in the corner, looked up.
“Mom?”
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Does this mean Grandpa wanted people to know the truth?”
I smiled gently.
“I think he wanted people to know the facts.”
Emily nodded.
“That’s good.”
“So nobody has to guess anymore.”
The adults exchanged quiet smiles.
Detective Brooks placed the newly received documents beside the growing stack of evidence.
“The investigation has become much clearer over the past few days.”
“Every independent source supports another.”
“The medical records.”
“The financial review.”
“The witness interviews.”
“The family journals.”
“The documents preserved by Mr. Collins’ father.”
He paused before carefully closing the final folder.
“Now we verify the last remaining pieces.”
Just then, another investigator entered carrying a tablet.
“We’ve completed the review of the address book.”
Brooks looked up.
“Any results?”
The investigator nodded.
“We located Margaret Ellis exactly where the note indicated.”
He tapped the screen.
“But there was another checked name.”
Brooks frowned.
“Who?”
The investigator turned the tablet so everyone could read it.
Printed beside the final check mark was a single name.
Judge Helen Whitmore (Retired).
Underneath it, in Richard’s father’s handwriting, were six carefully written words.
She knows why I stayed silent.
