PART 5
The photograph trembled between my fingers.
I stared at Ethan’s bruised face.
My husband.
The father of my child.
The man I had spent seven months believing had abandoned me.
But he hadn’t left.
He had been fighting.
Alone.
And the worst part was…
He had been fighting for me.
For our son.
I slowly looked at Richard Sullivan.
The man who had cried when he saw my baby.
The man who had promised to help me find Ethan.
The man Ethan had warned me not to trust.
“Richard…”
My voice was barely a whisper.
“What happened the night Ethan came home?”
Nobody moved.
Emily looked at her father.
Her expression had changed.
She wasn’t just confused anymore.
She was afraid.
“Dad…”
Richard closed his eyes.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he whispered:
“I made a mistake.”
My heart sank.
“What kind of mistake?”
He looked older than he had five minutes ago.
“I thought I was protecting my family.”
I shook my head.
“By hiding the truth?”
He didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
Seven months earlier…
Richard Sullivan had been in his office when Ethan arrived unexpectedly.
It was after midnight.
Ethan was bleeding from a cut above his eyebrow.
He was holding a small folder.
“Dad.”
Richard remembered the fear in his son’s eyes.
Not fear for himself.
Fear for Claire.
Fear for their unborn child.
“Ethan told me everything,” Richard said quietly.
“He had discovered that someone inside Sullivan Medical Group had been manipulating patient records and stealing money through fake contracts.”
Emily listened silently.
“And he knew who it was?”
Richard nodded.
“Yes.”
“Who?”
His eyes moved toward the floor.
“Daniel.”
I froze.
“But you said it wasn’t him.”
Richard swallowed.
“I lied.”
The room went silent.
“Why?”
“Because Daniel wasn’t working alone.”
My stomach tightened.
“Who else?”
Richard looked at me.
And the pain in his eyes told me the answer was worse than I imagined.
“He had help from someone I trusted more than anyone.”
I waited.
“Ethan’s mother.”
My entire body went cold.
Emily gasped.
“What?”
Richard shook his head.
“Your mother died years ago, Emily. But Ethan’s mother…”
He looked at me.
“She wasn’t dead.”
The room went silent.
I couldn’t understand.
“What are you saying?”
Richard took a shaky breath.
“Ethan’s mother, Victoria Sullivan, disappeared twelve years ago.”
Emily whispered:
“But Dad told us she died.”
“I know.”
Richard looked broken.
“I lied.”
The truth came out slowly.
Victoria Sullivan had never died.
She had secretly left the family after discovering Richard’s business decisions.
But years later, she returned.
And she wanted control.
She believed the Sullivan empire belonged to her.
Daniel helped her.
Together, they created fake companies, moved money, and manipulated records.
Ethan discovered everything.
And when Victoria realized her son knew the truth…
She made him disappear.
“But why didn’t you tell me?” I asked Richard.
His eyes filled with tears.
“Because Ethan begged me not to.”
I froze.
“What?”
“He came to me that night.”
Richard’s voice broke.
“He told me if Victoria knew I was helping him, she would come after you.”
“He wanted me to pretend I knew nothing.”
“He wanted me to protect you from a distance.”
I shook my head.
“Then why did Ethan tell me not to trust you?”
Richard looked confused.
“I don’t know.”
Then Emily suddenly stood.
“Wait.”
Everyone looked at her.
She looked at the photograph.
“The photo.”
She picked it up.
“The person who sent this wanted Claire to distrust Dad.”
She looked at me.
“That means Ethan never said that.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
Emily pointed at my phone.
“The call.”
Everyone became silent.
“The voice sounded like Ethan.”
I whispered.
“Because it was Ethan.”
Emily nodded.
“Maybe.”
She looked at Richard.
“But someone could have recorded him.”
A horrible realization entered the room.
Someone had been controlling the story.
Making us blame each other.
Keeping the family divided.
Because divided people are easier to destroy.
Suddenly, the hospital lights went out.
The room became completely dark.
My baby started crying.
Immediately, Richard moved toward us.
“Stay behind me.”
A door opened.
A woman’s voice filled the darkness.
“Still protecting everyone, Richard?”
My blood froze.
The lights came back.
Standing in the doorway was a woman.
Elegant.
Older.
Beautiful.
But her eyes were cold.
Emily covered her mouth.
“No…”
Richard whispered:
“Victoria.”
Ethan’s mother smiled.
“Hello, Richard.”
I held my son tighter.
The woman looked at my baby.
Then smiled.
“So this is Ethan’s mistake.”
Richard stepped forward.
“Don’t come near them.”
Victoria laughed softly.
“After all these years, you’re still pretending to be the hero.”
“You destroyed your own son.”
Her smile disappeared.
“No.”
She looked at me.
“Your son destroyed himself.”
I stared at her.
“You took Ethan.”
She looked amused.
“Yes.”
My heart broke.
“Why?”
“Because Ethan was supposed to inherit everything.”
She looked around.
“The company. The money. The power.”
Then she looked at my baby.
“But he chose you.”
I felt anger burning inside me.
“You mean he chose love.”
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“Love makes people weak.”
“No.”
I looked directly at her.
“Love is why he survived.”
For the first time, she looked uncertain.
Then the hospital door behind her opened.
Everyone turned.
A security officer entered.
But it wasn’t a security officer.
It was Ethan.
My entire world stopped.
He looked thinner.
Exhausted.
But alive.
“Claire.”
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t breathe.
“Ethan…”
He took one step forward.
Then another.
And when he reached me…
I hit his chest.
Not because I hated him.
Because I loved him.
Because I missed him.
Because seven months of pain had nowhere else to go.
“You idiot.”
I cried.
“You absolute idiot.”
He held me.
“I’m sorry.”
“You left me.”
“I know.”
“You let me hate you.”
“I know.”
“Why didn’t you come home?”
His eyes filled with tears.
“Because every day I stayed away was another day you were safe.”
I looked at him.
“You should have trusted me.”
He touched my face.
“I should have.”
Then he looked at our son.
For the first time…
He held his child.
The man who had missed the birth.
The first smile.
The first cry.
He held his son.
And cried.
“Hi, little man.”
His voice broke.
“I’m your father.”
The baby grabbed his finger.
And Ethan completely fell apart.
Victoria tried to escape.
But this time…
She had nowhere to go.
The evidence from Ethan’s memory card exposed everything.
The fraud.
The threats.
The kidnapping.
The entire scheme.
Daniel was arrested the same night.
Victoria faced charges for everything she had done.
The Sullivan Medical Group survived.
But Richard changed everything.
He stepped away from the company.
He donated millions to patient care programs.
He said money had almost destroyed his family.
He would spend the rest of his life making sure it helped people instead.
Six months later…
I stood in our backyard.
Our son was sleeping in Ethan’s arms.
The same man who once disappeared…
Now refused to miss a single moment.
We named our son Noah Sullivan Monroe.
A name that meant:
A new beginning.
Ethan and I were not the same people anymore.
The pain changed us.
But it also taught us something.
Sometimes people leave because they don’t love you.
And sometimes…
They leave because they are fighting battles you cannot see.
But love always finds a way back home.
Richard visited every Sunday.
He became the grandfather he never got to be before.
And every time he held Noah, he whispered the same words:
“Thank you for giving me my family back.”
Years later, when Noah was old enough to ask about the scar on his father’s face, Ethan smiled.
“That was from the day I learned something important.”
“What?”
“That the people we love are worth fighting for.”
Noah looked at him.
“And you won?”
Ethan looked at me.
Then at our family.
And smiled.
“Yes.”
“Because I found my way home.”
