Part 8: My Husband Sent Me a Photo With His Mistress

“We would prefer to focus on reconciliation rather than revisit every disagreement in the marriage.”

“Reconciliation requires honesty,” Rebecca replied. “Our client has provided documentation concerning financial control, physical intimidation, and an extramarital relationship. We are prepared to address each issue through the appropriate process.”

Cole’s face reddened.

“You’re making me sound like a criminal.”

“No one has made that determination,” Rebecca said calmly. “We are discussing documented events and the steps needed to resolve the situation.”

I watched him carefully.

He had spent years making me feel unreasonable whenever I questioned him.

Now he was sitting across from a woman who refused to be intimidated by his anger.

He turned toward me.

“Sierra meant nothing.”

I felt a strange stillness settle over me.

“Then why did you buy her a diamond necklace on Christmas Eve?”

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

“Why did you send me that photograph?”

“It was an accident.”

“I know.”

He looked relieved for half a second.

Then I continued.

“But the affair was not an accident. The necklace was not an accident. Leaving me alone with the babies was not an accident. Those were decisions.”

His expression hardened.

“You have no idea how much pressure I’ve been under.”

“Then you should have spoken to me honestly.”

“You wouldn’t understand.”

“You never gave me the chance.”

Silence filled the room.

For years, I had imagined confronting Cole with a perfect speech that would make him understand everything he had done.

But sitting across from him, I realized that no speech could force someone to accept responsibility.

I could explain my pain.

I could show him the evidence.

I could tell him how his choices had changed my life.

But I could not make him become the person I once believed he was.

Finally, Cole leaned forward.

“Come home, Lauren. We can forget all this. I’ll give you access to the accounts again. I’ll get rid of Sierra. We can start over.”

I looked at him.

“Will you stop controlling my money?”

“Yes.”

“Will you accept responsibility for grabbing my wrist?”

He hesitated.

“I was angry.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

His silence answered it.

I took a breath.

“Will you stop blaming me for your decisions?”

“Lauren, marriage is complicated.”

“Yes,” I said softly. “But respect isn’t.”

I stood.

Rebecca gathered her papers.

The meeting was over.

As I reached the door, Cole called after me.

“You’re throwing away everything we built!”

I turned around.

“No, Cole. I’m trying to save what’s left of me.”

Then I walked out.

For the first time, I did not wonder whether I had hurt his feelings.

I wondered why I had spent so long believing his feelings mattered more than mine.
