PART 8: My Parents Abandoned Me at Five—Then Returned
She swallowed.
“I wasn’t there for you.”
“No,” I said gently. “You weren’t.”
She didn’t defend herself.
She didn’t ask me to forgive her.
Instead, she sat on the sofa and looked at Grandpa’s photograph.
“I wish I had known him better.”
I sat beside her.
“He would have liked that.”
“Do you think he would have forgiven me?”
I considered the question.
“I think he would have given you a chance to do better. But he also would have expected you to take responsibility for what you did.”
Brianna nodded slowly.
“That sounds like him.”
We spent the afternoon talking about Grandpa.
I told her stories about his terrible singing, his stubborn refusal to buy new shoes, and the way he always pretended not to notice when I sneaked an extra cookie from the kitchen.
Brianna laughed.
Then she began sharing memories of her own childhood.
For the first time, I learned that Grandpa had visited her once when she was little. He had brought her a wooden music box and spent an afternoon teaching her how to wind it.
I had never known.
Our memories of him were different, but they belonged to the same man.
When Brianna left, she thanked me for listening.
I watched her walk down the driveway.
Our relationship wasn’t repaired.
Not yet.
But it was no longer built entirely on resentment.
There was room for something new.
And I had learned that I could leave that door open without handing anyone the keys to my life.
