PART 4 – My Daughter-in-Law Charged Me $2,000 for Staying at Her House—Then She Discovered the Fortune My Husband Left Me

PART 4

The next morning, I arrived at Graham and Bianca’s house at exactly 8:15.

I didn’t call first.

I didn’t text.

And I didn’t bring groceries.

For the first time in years, I walked into my son’s house without carrying something for everyone else.

Graham opened the door.

He looked as though he hadn’t slept.

“Mom.”

“Where’s Bianca?”

He stepped aside.

“She’s upstairs.”

“Good.”

I walked into the living room.

Maisie ran toward me.

“Grandma!”

I dropped my purse and hugged her.

Oliver followed.

For a few seconds, nothing else mattered.

I kissed their heads.

“I missed you.”

“We missed you too,” Oliver said.

Maisie whispered, “Are you staying?”

I smiled.

“Not today, sweetheart.”

Her face fell.

“But I came to see you.”

That was enough for her.

She hugged me tighter.

Then Graham cleared his throat.

“Mom, the lawyer is coming at ten.”

I nodded.

“Good.”

Bianca came downstairs ten minutes later.

She was dressed perfectly.

Her hair was styled.

Her makeup was flawless.

But the confidence she had shown the day before was gone.

She stopped when she saw me.

“You came back.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

I looked at her.

“To find out the truth.”

She folded her arms.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“I haven’t accused you of anything.”

“You’re implying something.”

“I don’t have to imply anything.”

Graham stepped between us.

“Mom isn’t here to fight.”

Bianca laughed.

“Of course she’s not. She came here to investigate me.”

“No,” I said quietly.

“I came here because your husband told me his father left me a trust.”

Bianca’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

So did Graham.

His eyes moved toward her.

“You knew.”

Bianca immediately shook her head.

“I knew nothing.”

“You just reacted.”

“No, I didn’t.”

Graham stared at her.

“Bianca.”

“I didn’t!”

Her voice cracked.

Then the doorbell rang.

Graham opened it.

A tall man in his late sixties stood outside holding a leather briefcase.

“Mrs. Whitmore?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Daniel Mercer. I’m the attorney handling your late husband’s trust.”

My heart skipped.

“Come in.”

We sat around the dining table.

Bianca remained standing.

Mr. Mercer opened his briefcase.

“I want to make something very clear before we begin. This trust was created privately by your husband, Richard, and the original documents were sealed.”

I nodded.

“Why?”

“Because your husband didn’t want anyone—including family members—to know about it until certain conditions were met.”

“What conditions?”

“You reaching the age of sixty.”

I stared at him.

“And why didn’t anyone tell me when I turned sixty?”

He looked uncomfortable.

“Because the trust was never properly activated.”

“Why?”

“Someone filed a legal objection.”

My heart sank.

“Who?”

He looked at Graham.

Then at Bianca.

Finally, he looked back at me.

“The objection was filed under the name of a company.”

“What company?”

He opened a folder.

“Whitmore Family Holdings.”

Graham looked at Bianca.

She immediately said,

“I don’t know anything about that.”

Mr. Mercer raised an eyebrow.

“Mrs. Whitmore, that company was registered to you.”

Bianca went silent.

Graham stood.

“You told me you never had a company.”

“I didn’t.”

“You’re listed as the managing member.”

“I don’t know why.”

Mr. Mercer placed another document on the table.

“Because you signed the incorporation papers.”

Bianca’s face turned white.

I stared at her.

“What was the company for?”

Mr. Mercer answered.

“Managing assets belonging to the trust.”

Graham looked stunned.

“How much?”

The lawyer closed his folder.

“The original trust contained approximately $2.4 million.”

Nobody moved.

Then Graham whispered,

“What?”

Bianca sank into a chair.

I couldn’t speak.

My husband had never been wealthy enough for $2.4 million.

At least, that’s what I had believed.

“Where did it come from?” I finally asked.

Mr. Mercer looked at me.

“Your husband’s business.”

“What business?”

“Several consulting contracts. Investments. Property sales. Royalties.”

I shook my head.

“Richard never told me.”

“He intended to.”

“When?”

“When the trust became active.”

“Why didn’t it?”

Mr. Mercer looked down.

“Because the company controlled the assets before the trust could transfer them.”

My eyes moved toward Bianca.

She looked away.

Graham’s voice was barely audible.

“Bianca.”

She didn’t answer.

“Did you know about this?”

“I knew there was money.”

“How much?”

“I didn’t know.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

She started crying.

“I knew there was a trust.”

The room became silent.

I felt something inside me break.

“You knew?”

She nodded.

“For how long?”

“Three years.”

Graham stepped backward.

“Three years?”

“I found the documents when we were refinancing the house.”

“And you never told me?”

“I was going to.”

“When?”

“I don’t know!”

I looked at her.

“Did you take money?”

She covered her face.

Mr. Mercer answered.

“Yes.”

Bianca lowered her hands.

“How much?”

“Approximately $186,000.”

Graham looked as though someone had punched him.

“You stole from my mother?”

“I didn’t steal!”

“You accessed her trust!”

“I thought it belonged to the family!”

Mr. Mercer interrupted.

“It did not.”

Bianca began crying.

“I was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?” I asked.

“That you would take everything.”

I stared at her.

“Everything?”

She nodded.

“You were already living in my son’s house.”

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

“No, you don’t!”

She stood.

“I saw the trust documents and realized that if Graham knew about the money, he’d want to use it to help you.”

“And that was wrong?”

“Yes!”

She shouted the word.

Then she froze.

Graham looked at her.

“Why?”

Bianca started crying harder.

“Because I was scared.”

“Of what?”

She wiped her face.
