PART 9: “The Locked Box”
Detective Brooks placed the photographs on the table one by one.
“I want to be clear,” he said. “Everything inside the box is still being examined. We won’t jump to conclusions.”
I nodded.
“What was in it?”
“A collection of documents.”
He pointed to the first photograph.
“Property records.”
The second.
“Bank statements.”
The third.
“Insurance policies.”
Then he placed down one final photograph.
A stack of sealed envelopes.
“They were all labeled with dates.”
Ms. Alvarez leaned forward.
“Dates of what?”
“We don’t know yet.”
Brooks carefully opened his notebook.
“What caught our attention was how organized everything was.”
“Every document was filed.”
“Every payment was recorded.”
“It appears Richard kept detailed records of nearly every major financial decision.”
I stared at the pictures.
“I never knew that box existed.”
“He appears to have kept it locked in a cabinet inside his home office.”
Dr. Harper quietly folded his arms.
“Sometimes people who seek control document everything they believe strengthens their position.”
Brooks nodded.
“Which is why we’re reviewing each document carefully.”
Just then another detective entered the room carrying a thin evidence envelope.
“We finished reviewing one of the sealed letters.”
Brooks looked up.
“Anything useful?”
The detective handed him a copy.
“It appears to be a handwritten timeline.”
“A timeline?”
“It lists important family events over several years.”
Brooks read silently for a moment.
“There are birthdays.”
“School events.”
“Medical appointments.”
He stopped reading.
“And notes about financial transfers.”
I frowned.
“Financial transfers?”
“The timeline appears to match several of the bank records we already recovered.”
Ms. Alvarez looked toward me.
“Do you remember signing paperwork for loans or account changes?”
I shook my head.
“Richard always told me the paperwork wasn’t important.”
“I trusted him.”
Brooks made another note.
“We’ll verify every signature.”
“We’ll compare dates.”
“And we’ll determine exactly who authorized each transaction.”
Emily quietly looked up from her book.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“When we leave here…”
She smiled shyly.
“Can I still go to my school?”
Karen Douglas, who had just stepped back into the room, answered gently.
“We’ll do everything we can to keep your routine as normal as possible.”
Emily smiled.
“Okay.”
Lily hugged her stuffed rabbit.
“I just want us all together.”
I reached over and held both of my daughters close.
“For the first time in years,” I whispered, “that’s exactly what we’re going to be.”
Detective Brooks closed the evidence folder.
“We still have a great deal of work ahead.”
“But every interview…”
“Every medical record…”
“Every document…”
“They’re helping us understand the full picture.”
His phone vibrated once more.
He answered briefly before ending the call.
“What happened?” Dr. Harper asked.
Brooks slipped the phone back into his pocket.
“The laboratory completed its review of one item from the locked box.”
Everyone waited.
Brooks looked directly at me.
“They found a document with a signature that investigators now need to determine is authentic.”
The room fell completely silent.
